Matthew awarded MBE

Catriona Matthew, the first Scot to win a women’s major championship at the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list.

The 40-year-old from North Berwick, who stunned golf fans when she took her first major championship title at Royal Lytham and St Anne's just 11 weeks after giving birth to her second child, Sophie, revealed she was ‘flattered’ to receive such an accolade.

“This is a wonderful surprise and a fantastic end to what has been a very special year in so many ways,” she said. “Not many female golfers have received honours, so I’m hugely flattered. The MBE really is the icing on the cake.”

Matthew has also been named one of 13 new Vice Presidents of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, as Emma Wilson takes over from Ethel Jack as President.

”I was delighted to accept the post of Vice President,” said. Matthew “It is always special to gain recognition in Scotland and, hopefully, I can help generate more interest in girls’ and women’s golf.”
